In an interview with the Japanese media, Japanese Video Game Designer Kazutaka Kodaka has revealed more information regarding Master Detective Archives: Rain Code, the spiritual successor to the Danganronpa series, below are the summarised info:
-A special organisation that aims to “clear all the unsolved cases in the world” exists in the world setting, and the super detectives that belonged in this group all came with different superpowers, and the superpowers come in various forms, similar to the “Ultimate” students in Danganronpa.
-The main character Yuma is an apprentice detective, and not super detective. Though he don’t have any super powers, but he has formed a pact with the reaper, and is able to solve most cases with it. How the pact is formed and what is the meaning behind plays a key role in the game’s narrative.
-Many famous detectives will be featured in the game, and each of them had their own point of view and relationship maps.
-In terms of exploration, Yuma has to pair with the other super detectives. In Danganronpa, players collect proofs and clues from investigating the crimescene, and most cases plays out similarly. But that is not the case in Rain Code; the method of investigation varies depending on which super detective you are pairing with.
-The exact superpowers are yet to be revealed, but similar descriptions are revealed. For example, some of them might be able to control insects, and uses insects to investigate places where humans cannot reach.
-The super detectives gained their superpowers after training in their special organisation.
-The super detectives are publicly known and admired by many. And the Shinigami is only visible to Yuma alone.
-The game is set in the modern era, and the technology levels is similar to the real world. But the story is not set in Japan or any place in the world, but a brand new city with a fresh worldview.
-The basic gameflow is similar to Danganronpa, Firstly, the story will progress until a case happens, and the detectives will begin their investigation. But when the investigation ends, the mega corporation that takes control of the city will cover the truth. To fight against them, Yuma will have to explore the “Mystery Maze” with Shinigami to identify the culprit. After Shinigami activates its power, the real world will be affected as well, and the crimes covered by the conglomerates will be revealed as well.
– The mazes differs in style based on the types of murderer cases. When Yuma enters the maze, the time in real time will be stopped, and if they don’t clear the maze, they will be stuck inside forever.
-One of Yuma’s trait is that he doesn’t disturb the player’s thought process, and the player can easily feel and think in his shoes. His banter with Shinigami is very interesting as well.
– While exploring the city, Shinigami will follow Yuma in the form of a spirit, and takes a physical form of human in the maze.
-This is a Danganronpa styled game that inherited the “evil intentions” from Danganronpa as well as other elements.
-The game will be released in Spring 2023, and the game took about 6 years to develop. The game didn’t go through a redesign or restart, and the long development duration was due to the rich content it had.
-Though it is still too early to say this, but I really want to see Master Detective Archives: Rain Code to be made into a series, and become a new platform for Detective games.
