Staff were notified via an email of the layoffs, being told that it wasn’t due to the studio’s performance and rather about reducing the overall workforce.

We’ve reached out to PlayStation for comment on the layoffs, and will update when they respond.

Not Just PlayStation Studios Malaysia Layoffs In Progress: A Global Problem

The PlayStation Studios Malaysia Layoffs follows a seemingly global trend for Sony Interactive Entertainment- in early February, Senior Design Technologist at PlayStation studios Oscar Diaz, who worked on both the PS5 and PS Portal also announced his team had been laid off in February.

Similarly, late last year Firewalk Studios, the developers of Concord, were also laid off following the game’s failure to pick up players.

This also follows turbulent news such as Bloomberg’s report of multiple live service projects being axed- including a God of War title.

It’s not currently known how the PlayStation Studios Malaysia layoffs affect their ongoing projects- the studio houses a Motion Capture Training Facility, as well as over 100 staff.
