EVO Japan Day 3 Announcements: Slayer, Lidia and Akuma Join The Fight

All three titles showed off new characters coming to the game, with the official reveals of Slayer for Guilty Gear Strive and Akuma for Street FIghter 6, as well as a short teaser for Lidia from Tekken 8.

Slayer will release on May 30th for Guilty Gear Strive, and features his signature pugilist playstyle of weaving in and out and punishing with high-damage Pilebunkers.

His release will also include a new stage for the game, though Arc System Works have mentioned that the Slayer patch will not be including any balance changes for previous characters.

Tekken 8 also highlighted its Season 1 roadmap, with plans for new story content, a beach stage and even a photo mode coming to the game.

The story update will feature previous DLC character Eddy Gordo, and they also revealed that Lidia would be coming in the summer update alongside the beach content.

Not to be outdone, there was also a gameplay trailer for Akuma, where we see the iconic master of the Satsui No Hadou take the stage with an array of powerful tools both old and new, including a surprise reveal of his iconic super- the Raging Demon.

Akuma launches for Street Fighter 6 on May 22nd, and will also be available as a mentor in World Tour mode while also coming with a new stage for Fighting Ground called Enma’s Hollow.

It wasn’t just game content that was announced, however- Capcom also announced that Capcom Cup 11 would see its finals held in Tokyo next year at the Ryogoku Kokugikan.

This even was previously announced to be matching the Capcom Cup X event’s prize money of 1 million USD to first place/

EVO Japan Day 3 Results

Of course, the highlight of the event was the competition itself- spread out between top 6 for Guilty Gear Strive, Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6.

Guilty Gear Strive saw a dominating display by American player Tempest NYC, who took out Korean player Sanakan from the Winner’s side in a 3-0 onslaught.

Tempest played Leo Whitefang, while Sanakan played Happy Chaos, and the match was just one of many 3-0s by Tempest over the weekend.

Similarly, Tekken 8 also saw Japanese player Chikurin dominate Korea’s Lowhigh in another 3-0 beatdown- using Lili’s various defensive tools to overpower Lowhigh’s offense with both Steve Fox and meta pick Dragunov.

Finally, the event came to a roaring climax with Street Fighter 6’s grand finals, which saw fan favorite MenaRD from the Dominican Republic taking on Japan’s own Kakeru.

There, MenaRD also put on a dazzling 3-0 display, as his Blanka overwhelmed Kakeru’s JP and left him open to multiple throw loops and Blanka-Chan dolls.

While the winners all won 1 million Yen each alongside gifts from Victrix and Rohto, Tempest NYC also auto-qualifies for the Arc World Tour 2024 Finals- while Chikurin also earns points for the Tekken World Tour 2024.
